Strategic bulwark for the defense of the coast
n 1282 appears for the first time a document that talks about the Castle of Castro and its strategic importance for the defense of the coast. Destroyed in 1480 by the Turks, it was rebuilt in 1572 by the Spanish viceroy.
The rectangular plan of the Castle has four towers different in shape and size at its corners, a moat all around and an entrance with drawbridge (now removed). In the past, the courtyard was used as a warehouse for agricultural products to be marketed in the Mediterranean area.
The two most impressive towers are the Torre Cavaliera with barrel vaults that is spread over three levels and the Torre Circolare adorned with small windows in raggera formed by three rooms lined.
The entire structure has been restored in recent years and today is home to the Museo Civico Antonio Lazzari, which houses the interesting permanent exhibition Castrum Minervae: tra Greci e Messapi (Castrum Minervae: between Greeks and Messapi).
Visiting a castle always has its charm, so if you are nearby, a visit is a must.
Nel 1282 compare per la prima volta un documento in cui si parla del Castello di Castro e della sua strategica importanza per la difesa della costa. Distrutto nel 1480 dai Turchi fu poi ricostruito nel 1572 dal vicerè spagnolo.
La pianta rettangolare del castello è provvista di quattro torri diverse per forma e dimensioni ai suoi angoli, un fossato tutto intorno e un ingresso con ponte levatoio (oggi rimosso). il cortile interno in passato era destinato come deposito di prodotti agricoli da commercializzare nell’area del Mediterraneo.
Le due torri più imponenti sono la Torre Cavaliera con volte a botte che si sviluppa su tre livelli e la Torre Circolare adornata da piccole finestre a raggera formata da tre vani incolonnati.
L’intera struttura è stata restaurata negli ultimi anni ed oggi è sede del Museo Civico Antonio Lazzari, che ospita l’interessantissima mostra permanente Castrum Minervae: tra Greci e Messapi.
Visitare un castello ha sempre il suo fascino, quindi se vi trovate nei paraggi, un salto è d’obbligo.
